A description of Professor Sarah-Jane Leslie's talk:
When asked to consider what it takes to succeed, people give very different answers depending on their chosen field. In some fields, success is viewed primarily as a matter of hard work and dedication -- but in others, success is seen as requiring a special, unteachable spark of brilliance. Cultural stereotypes strongly associate this sort of raw genius with men rather than women -- where are the pop cultural portrayals of female Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Houses, or Will Huntings? -- meaning that women may be discouraged from pursuing careers in such fields, due to stereotype threat. This talk presents recent empirical findings suggesting that these stereotypes shape girls’ and women’s educational and career choices, starting at a young age and continuing through adulthood. The talk also extends the findings beyond gender to diversity more generally, including racial diversity. It concludes by offering practical suggestions for how educators and employers can help diversify their fields, and how parents and alumni can promote an environment that is inclusive and open, as well as most conducive to achievement.
